City to reconstruct affordable housing that was demolished 14 years ago.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $40 million to the Atlanta Housing Authority to redevelop the Bowen Homes affordable housing area. The affordable houses originally in the area were demolished in June 2009, and the land has remained vacant ever since. This grant funding will return affordable housing to the area, hoping to establish a more sustainable blend of mixed-income housing to bring diversity to the neighborhood.
“I am pleased to see Atlanta get this Choice Neighborhoods award,” said HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge. “The City of Atlanta and Atlanta Housing Authority have demonstrated their commitment to neighborhood revitalization, having undergone a comprehensive planning effort to redevelop Bowen Homes and the entire Bowen area. The whole-of-government approach to neighborhood revitalization is what leads to impactful changes in the neighborhoods that need it the most.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Fudge as she and her department assess the need for affordable housing.
- For HUD officials as they determine who will receive awards for neighborhood revitalization.
